The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
